Expert talk: End-to-end warehouse automation with SAP EWM at DAW

DAW SE is a leading international company in the building paints and building materials industry. As a renowned manufacturer and supplier of high-quality paints, varnishes, plasters, insulating materials and other building materials, DAW SE is known for innovative research and development as well as sustainable solutions for the construction industry. In 2019, the company was faced with the challenge of replacing its existing IT infrastructure, expanding its existing warehouses and optimising and automating warehouse processes. The aim was to implement end-to-end warehouse automation with SAP EWM by LogiPlus Consulting.

“The project consisted of medium and long-term goals. In the medium term, the existing SAP WM and the existing systems had to be replaced by SAP EWM and SAP EWM MFS. In the long term, the EWM processes had to grow in line with the construction progress and the associated commissioning. Due to the different automated trades, the biggest advantage was that everything could be connected via SAP EWM MFS. SAP EWM is therefore the central control unit for all process sequences. The implementation took place during ongoing operations and the delivery service to the customer was ensured at every stage. The overall project enabled external warehouse activities to be fully integrated back into the Ober-Ramstadt site.”Jörg Martin summarises the implementation project process.

In the first step, the experts from LogiPlus, together with DAW SE, replaced the existing warehouse management system SAP WM with a decentralised SAP EWM in order to expand the inventory warehouse. By optimising the material flow with SAP EWM MFS, automation solutions such as AutoStore and a forklift control system could then be introduced and integrated into the project. SAP S/4HANA was implemented downstream as an ERP system and now completes the automated intralogistics landscape at DAW’s main site.

In the IT Onlinemagazine Expert Talk on October 10, Jörg Martin, Head of Finished Goods Warehouse at DAW SE, and LogiPlus CEO Thilo Matheis answer questions from Helge Sanden and Maike Rose from IT Onlinemagazine. Among other things, they talk about the challenges and the resulting goals. Project implementation, the go-live and the hypercare phase as well as success factors will also be highlighted during the expert discussion.

By connecting directly to SAP EWM, companies can create end-to-end processes and thus tap into the full potential in terms of efficiency and performance in intralogistics. The success of our customer DAW is the best example of this,” says LogiPlus founder Thilo Matheis, explaining the general situation on the market and the recommended approach.
