The CLAAS KGaA mbH headquartered in Harsewinkel, East Westphalia, is the global market leader in the manufacture of self-propelled forage harvesters and is also the market leader in the combine harvester product group. As the new ERP system was to be implemented at a later date, CLAAS chose to implement a decentralised stand-alone SAP EWM system ahead of time in order to replace the previous decentralised SAP LES at nine locations.
CLAAS chose SAP S/4HANA as its future ERP system. However, since its introduction will not take place until a later date, it was necessary to develop the optimal migration strategy for the warehouse management software, especially since a decentralized SAP LES was still in use at nine locations. Claas opted for an upstream implementation of a decentralised stand-alone SAP EWM system.
This approach offers various advantages:
As a total of nine warehouses were to be implemented, CLAAS chose a template approach for the decentralised SAP EWM S/4HANA. To prioritise the warehouses to be rolled out, a rollout plan was developed to determine when which warehouse would be migrated to SAP EWM. The Bad Saulgau site was selected for the pilot project in order to benefit from the experience gained during the rollout of the largest warehouse at the headquarters in Harsewinkel.
About the warehouse in Bad Saulgau:
In order to be able to guarantee production supply on site, certain products were outsourced to three warehouses operated by service providers that were integrated into a warehouse number for space reasons. The main warehouse basically consists of three areas: a narrow-aisle warehouse for large load carriers, a manual small parts warehouse on three floors and a large open-air warehouse for large-volume storage parts in the outdoor area.
As a total of nine warehouses are implemented with a decentralised SAP EWM S/4HANA, CLAAS chose a template approach. The focus here is on production supply.
This phase, which lasted from October 2018 to December 2019, was fundamental to the success of the project. It was determined which processes belong to the template and how they are structured. These were defined across the board for all warehouses.
As this was a Group-wide issue, a dedicated CLAAS Group template team consisting of around ten people was nominated. This core team included the logistics managers of the individual sites to be implemented as well as the central IT department of the CLAAS Group.
From August 2019 to January 2020, parts shipping for a total of ten sister plants was integrated into SAP EWM. This involved the plants in Germany, France, Hungary, Russia, the USA, China and India. In addition, parts shipping was integrated for some customers optimised.
From February 2020 to May 2020, the processes in the long goods warehouse at the headquarters in Harsewinkel were migrated to SAP EWM.
Creation of an SAP EWM template that can be used for all CLAAS locations.
The SAP EWM template was validated with the project in Bad Saulgau.
The set go-live date could not be postponed, as otherwise the rollout plan for the subsequent implementation projects would not have been sustainable.
Part of the implementation had to be carried out remotely due to the coronavirus.
Consideration of the historically grown, logistically optimised supply of production tailored to CLAAS.
Early development of SAP EWM know-how at CLAAS to enable the standardisation of processes.
