From SAP WM to SAP EWM: The customise strategy for switching from SAP WM!

SAP WM since 1993

SAP WM was once SAP’s flagship warehouse management solution. The software was continuously developed until 2005. And with additional solutions, processes and systems that were not included could be integrated, e.g. floor conveyor technology or machine control.

But with the launch of SAP EWM in 2005, that was the end of it. Since then, SAP has stopped developing SAP WM functionally and has focused on SAP EWM, one of the most modern and complex warehouse management systems in the world.

Even back then, SAP EWM contained numerous standard functionalities that either did not exist in SAP WM or could only be mapped using add-ons. The path from an inventory-managed warehouse to a process-managed warehouse had been taken.

Discontinuation of SAP WM in 2025

In February 2020, SAP announced the end of mainstream maintenance for SAP Business Suite 7 at the end of 2027, but with the option to extend maintenance until the end of 2030. SAP WM as part of the expiring ERP 6.0 will be replaced by SAP Stock Room Management (SAP STRM) after the end of maintenance of SAP ERP 6.0.

If a company has already introduced SAP S/4HANA, it has the option of using the existing SAP WM in the S/4HANA core until 2025. Existing WM processes remain in place and can be used with the help of S/4HANA optimised. However, the SAP WM migration should be completed by the end of 2025 at the latest, either to SAP Stock Room Management or SAP EWM.

However, SAP STRM only contains a reduced scope of services, and no further functional developments are planned by SAP. For this reason, migration to SAP EWM is necessary in the majority of cases in order to be able to map the warehouse processes.

More Information

SAP Stock Room Management is an alternative to the continuation of SAP WM after the end of compatibility mode in 2025.

The solution is integrated into SAP S/4HANA and is particularly interesting for simple and small warehouses – but with a reduced scope of services and without further developments by SAP.

SAP EWM

More Information

If SAP Stock Room Management does not offer the required scope of services – numerous SAP WM functions are no longer mapped there – the only option is to switch to SAP EWM.

SAP EWM is the right solution, especially for companies with more complex and automated warehouse processes.

When is SAP EWM the right solution?

Switching to SAP EWM opens up many advantages and opportunities. Existing processes can be redesigned and made more efficient. The solution also lays the logistical foundations for growth.

Due to the strategic importance of the software for SAP, it offers a high degree of innovation security. Continuous further development and optimisation is guaranteed. Below are some examples of cases in which SAP S/4HANA EWM is the right solution:

Flexible process control

Companies want to actively and flexibly control resources and warehouse processes.

Complex warehouse processes

The complexity is high, e.g. due to multi-stage picking

Automation

The degree of automation is high. Automated warehouse technology must be connected.

Increasing throughput

The material throughput time from goods receipt to goods issue is to be improved by increasing throughput.

Integrated supply chain

Warehouse and transportation processes should be integrated and interlinked (e.g. SAP TM).

RF connection

RF functionalities are required for workplace activities.

Frequently asked questions about migrating from SAP WM to SAP EWM

What is the difference between SAP WM and SAP EWM?

SAP Warehouse Management (SAP WM) and SAP Extended Warehouse Management (SAP EWM) differ both in terms of their functional scope and SAP system architecture. For many small and medium-sized companies with less complex warehouse processes, SAP WM integrated in SAP ERP is the right solution.

However, the range of services offered by SAP EWM is many times greater. Compared to SAP WM, SAP EWM offers significantly more functions: for tasks ranging from goods receipt and internal warehouse processes to goods issue. Warehouse processes are considerably simplified. For example, there is an integrated warehouse management monitor. People, end devices and information can be networked with each other. A direct connection to the material flow control system is possible with the integrated SAP MFS.

Thanks to the additional functions, considerably more processes can be standardised. This increases process reliability and reduces error rates. SAP EWM thus significantly increases the quality and efficiency of all processes. And while numerous add-ons are required in SAP WM to map company-specific processes, many are already included in the SAP EWM standard.

There are the two basic options listed below.

Temporary use of SAP WM in SAP S/4HANA until 2025

If SAP S/4HANA has already been introduced in the company, it is possible to use the existing SAP WM in the S/4HANA core on a transitional basis until 2025. Existing WM processes will remain in place and can be optimised with the help of S/4HANA. However, the switch to SAP EWM, whether embedded or decentralised, must be completed by the end of 2025 at the latest. This option can therefore be regarded as a phase of the migration to SAP EWM.

Use of SAP Stock Room Management in SAP S/4HANA

As SAP WM will no longer be usable after 2025, it will be possible to use SAP Stock Room Management as the designated successor to WM. However, the solution integrated into SAP S/4HANA will have a smaller scope of services than its predecessor. More information.

For many companies with more complex and automated warehouse processes, SAP Stock Room Management is not sufficient and SAP EWM is the right solution. This is the case, for example, when

  • companies want to actively and flexibly manage their resources and processes in the warehouse,
  • the complexity is high, e.g. multi-stage picking,
  • the degree of automation increases,
  • automated storage technology,
  • the throughput increases,
  • warehouse and transport processes are to be integrated, e.g. SAP TM integration,
  • RF functions are required for workplace activities.

Since SAP WM as part of the discontinued ERP 6.0 will no longer be available after 2025, a switch to SAP EWM must be made by then. If the WM successor integrated in S/4HANA SAP Stock Room Management integrated in S/4HANA does not offer the required scope of services – because numerous WM functions are no longer mapped in SAP Stock Room Management, for an overview see here – the switch to SAP EWM is absolutely essential and should be initiated at an early stage.

Through a switch from SAP WM to SAP EWM opens up many advantages and opportunities. Existing processes can be redesigned and made more efficient. The solution also lays the logistical foundations for growth.

As SAP EWM is a strategically important product for SAP that is continuously optimised and further developed, it offers the highest degree of innovation security

The project duration for the implementation of the market-leading warehouse management system SAP EWM depends heavily on the complexity and company-specific requirements. The project methodology (e.g. agile or hybrid approach) also has a significant influence on the duration. In principle, however, the project duration in many projects can be around 1 year or more.

With the Rapid Deployment Solution developed by LogiPlus LP PoweredEWM developed by LogiPlus, it is possible to implement SAP EWM in just 12 weeks. This project methodology includes completely preconfigured processes, is based on best practices and includes customised LP add-ons to close functional gaps in the standard. This approach massively reduces the implementation time. This effect is reinforced by training and onboarding directly on the live system.

SAP EWM can be integrated both decentrally and embedded in S/4HANA.

  • The decentralised version is only available as a full Advanced version.
  • The embedded version, on the other hand, is available both as a slimmed-down Basic version, which is already included in the SAP S/4HANA core, and as a more comprehensive Advanced version.
