SAP EWM (Extended Warehouse Management) is a highly standardised and efficient warehouse management system that covers all warehouse requirements. Regardless of whether it is a distribution, production or spare parts warehouse.
The market-leading system was originally only available as part of SAP SCM (SAP Supply Chain Management). However, SAP EWM can now also be fully integrated(embedded) in SAP S/4HANA or mapped as decentralized EWM in SAP S/4HANA. The solution is also available in the SAP Cloud as SAP EWM Private Cloud .
Smooth warehouse processes require flexibility and transparency as well as seamless integration into the existing value chain and system architecture. Modern warehouse management means full control over all goods movements – from goods receipt to delivery.
By dovetailing intralogistics processes with upstream and downstream transport and yard management processes and integrating them into the ERP system, customers benefit from holistic, flexible and smooth supply chain management. And it doesn’t matter whether they are dealing with highly automated, complex warehouse locations or small locations with low throughput.
SAP EWM is characterised by modern, highly flexible warehouse planning and work organisation as well as extensive possibilities for automation. This applies to all processes and functions in the warehouse, e.g.

As a customer, you now have numerous options for integration and how the systems and applications are set up. On the one hand, these depend on the strategy with regard to the warehouse management software. On the other hand, the approach is influenced by the ERP software strategy (SAP S/4HANA). Below is a selection of questions that are relevant to the customized roadmap:
Of course, there are numerous other questions that influence the approach. Based on the answers, it is now necessary to develop an individual approach for each company.

SAP EWM (Extended Warehouse Management) is a highly standardised and efficient warehouse management system that covers all warehouse requirements. Regardless of whether it is a distribution, production or spare parts warehouse. SAP EWM enables the management and control of all warehouse movements and warehouse processes and offers maximum flexibility.
SAP EWM optimises all warehouse processes and offers many advantages:
SAP Warehouse Management (SAP WM) and SAP Extended Warehouse Management (SAP EWM) differ both in terms of their functional scope and SAP system architecture. For many small and medium-sized companies with less complex warehouse processes, SAP WM integrated in SAP ERP is the right solution.
However, the range of services offered by SAP EWM is many times greater. Compared to SAP WM, SAP EWM offers significantly more functions: for tasks ranging from goods receipt and internal warehouse processes to goods issue. Warehouse processes are considerably simplified. For example, there is an integrated warehouse management monitor. People, end devices and information can be networked with each other. A direct connection to the material flow control system is possible with the integrated SAP MFS.
Thanks to the additional functions, considerably more processes can be standardised. This increases process reliability and reduces error rates. SAP EWM thus significantly increases the quality and efficiency of all processes. And while numerous add-ons are required in SAP WM to map company-specific processes, many are already included in the SAP EWM standard.
As SAP WM will no longer be available after 2025 as part of the discontinued ERP 6.0, a switch to SAP EWM must be made by then. If the WM successor SAP Stock Room Management integrated in S/4HANA does not offer the required scope of services – because numerous WM functions are no longer mapped in SAP Stock Room Management – the switch to SAP EWM is absolutely essential and should be initiated at an early stage.
Switching from SAP WM to SAP EWM opens up many advantages and opportunities. Existing processes can be redesigned and made more efficient. The solution also lays the logistical foundations for growth.
As SAP EWM is a strategically important product for SAP, which is continuously optimised and further developed, it offers a high degree of innovation security.
SAP EWM can be integrated both decentrally and embedded in S/4HANA.
As an alternative to integrating SAP EWM into an existing S/4HANA system or as part of an S/4HANA implementation, there is the option of early migration to a decentralised standalone SAP EWM system, for example if the S/4 migration is still pending.
The advantage of this approach is that the switch to SAP EWM is decoupled from the implementation of an SAP S/4HANA system, both in terms of time and technology. In addition, maintenance on the existing SAP ERP system has no impact on SAP EWM. Another advantage is that the SAP EWM system can communicate with both SAP ECC and S/4HANA and use the standard system distribution model. This opens up the option of integrating the standalone solution later as an embedded variant.
There are the two basic options listed below.
Temporary use of SAP WM in SAP S/4HANA until 2025
If SAP S/4HANA has already been introduced in the company, it is possible to use the existing SAP WM in the S/4HANA core on a transitional basis until 2025. Existing WM processes will remain in place and can be optimised with the help of S/4HANA. However, the switch to SAP EWM, whether embedded or decentralised, must be completed by the end of 2025 at the latest. This option can therefore be regarded as a phase of the migration to SAP EWM.
Use of SAP Stock Room Management in SAP S/4HANA
As SAP WM will no longer be usable from 2025, it will be possible to use SAP Stock Room Management as the designated successor to WM. However, the solution integrated into SAP S/4HANA will have a smaller scope of services than its predecessor. More information.
For many companies with more complex and automated warehouse processes, SAP Stock Room Management is not sufficient and SAP EWM is the right solution. This is the case, for example, when
The project duration for the implementation of the market-leading warehouse management system SAP EWM depends heavily on the complexity and company-specific requirements. The project methodology (e.g. agile or hybrid approach) also has a significant influence on the duration. In general, however, the project duration in many projects is at least one year.
However, with the LP PoweredEWM Rapid Deployment Solution developed by LogiPlus, it is possible to implement SAP EWM in just 12 weeks. This project methodology includes completely preconfigured processes, is based on best practices and includes customise LP add-ons to close functional gaps in the standard. This approach massively reduces the implementation time. This effect is reinforced by training and onboarding directly on the live system.
SAP EWM as part of the SAP S/4HANA platform has massive advantages over traditional databases thanks to the use of in-memory technology. By processing large volumes of data (big data) with very high performance, evaluations and transactions can be carried out in SAP EWM within fractions of a second in real time. SAP S/4HANA is therefore one of the most important building blocks for digital transformation.
Using S/4HANA opens up the following advantages, among others:
Storage bin management is used to map all warehouse facilities in SAP EWM. Different warehouse types such as automated warehouses, high-bay warehouses, block warehouses or fixed storage locations can be set up and company-specific requirements defined.
All warehouse movements can be tracked precisely as the entire warehouse is mapped in the system. This enables the optimal placement of products, depending on size and access frequency.
Integrated inventory management with stocktaking and recording of differences ensures that the book inventory matches the EWM inventory.
SAP EWM maps all goods movements in the warehouse. These include, for example, goods receipt, stock transfer, automatic replenishment, management of hazardous materials, processing of stock differences or shipping activities such as picking, packing, transportation or goods issue.
SAP EWM is used to process all goods movements and individually design material flows. Different putaway and retrieval strategies allow warehouse capacities to be optimized.
An overview of all goods movements and stock levels enables the planning, monitoring and optimization of stock levels. All warehouse activities can be controlled in this way, for example through forward-looking load monitoring or early intervention in critical processes.
SAP EWM integrates various third-party systems (warehouse control computers) for automated storage and retrieval or forklift control systems using an application link enabling interface.
Mobile radio terminals enable efficient control of the individual work steps of warehouse employees with SAP EWM and ensure a high quality standard in the warehouse.
A radio frequency connection (RF connection) optimised enables mobile data collection through fast and error-free data transmission. The RF devices receive the data directly from the SAP system, e.g. via barcodes, verify it and then transmit it to SAP EWM.
During the regular physical stocktaking of the warehouse, the physical stock data is compared with the data in SAP EWM. If there are inventory differences, the accounting inventory data is updated. SAP EWM makes it possible to carry out a product or warehouse-related physical inventory with configurable tolerance groups. SAP EWM also supports automatic write-offs according to time limits, zero checks or a low stock check. The system also integrates RF functions into the inventory process.
SAP EWM can be used to map personalized workstations for individual warehouse activities such as packing, deconsolidation, weighing, quality checks and counting.
