Material flow control encompasses the automated control, monitoring and optimisation of data and information flows associated with the movement of materials in automated warehouses or production facilities. From goods receipt and storage to order picking and dispatch, efficient material flow control ensures that goods are available at the right time, in the right quantity and in the right place. Large numbers of machines and components, such as conveyors and storage and retrieval machines, must be coordinated in real time.
Material flow systems connect the warehouse management system with programmable logic controllers (PLCs). They enable material flow control in real time from goods receipt to dispatch. They manage, coordinate and control resources, transportation and replenishment for order picking. They also control the movement of goods from goods receipt through warehousing and order picking to dispatch. The material flow control system optimised determines the sequence of work steps, monitors order processing and issues movement commands to the PLC.
