The ProMinent group of companies based in Heidelberg, Germany, develops and manufactures components and systems for dosing liquids as well as solutions for water treatment and water disinfection. A new automated small parts warehouse (AKL) was built at the main plant in Heidelberg as a 3-aisle container warehouse with double-deep storage.
SAP LES was implemented under SAP ECC 5.0.
For the RF transactions, the WebSAP console was used together with the proven LogiPlus product LP MobileGRAFIX for intuitive graphical user interfaces.
The first challenge is the implementation of double-deep storage in the automated small parts warehouse (AS/RS). This system maximises storage capacity, but requires precise control of warehouse movements and adaptation of processes.
The second challenge is to develop intuitive and user-optimised user interfaces. These should make it easier for employees to operate the warehouse management system, increase efficiency and reduce the error rate.
A key objective is to increase storage capacity by at least 80%. This is to be achieved through optimised use of existing storage space and the introduction of new storage technology. ProMinent is also aiming to increase the number of double cycles by at least 20%, which is to be achieved through more efficient work processes and better planning of warehouse movements.
Another important point is the improvement of order completion per picking station. Until now, picking has taken place from aisle to aisle, but in future it will be completed directly at the picking station. This will speed up the picking processes and reduce the susceptibility to errors. At the same time, the material flow after picking is to be significantly improved, which is to be achieved through targeted optimisation of the corresponding processes.
An optimised storage location strategy will also be implemented in order to separate fast-moving and slow-moving items in a targeted manner and thus speed up access to frequently required items. In addition, the material flow system is to be designed in such a way that decoupling is possible, which increases the flexibility and reliability of the overall system.
A key criterion for the success of the project is adherence to the planned schedule, cost and quality framework. Plant and system availability of at least 98% after completion of the project was targeted in order to ensure smooth and continuous operation.
The outdated “black box” process will be replaced by transparent and traceable processes. In addition, work ergonomics in the picking zones will be significantly improved through the introduction of intuitive graphical user interfaces. This relieves the pickers of secondary tasks and allows them to concentrate on their core tasks.
Finally, the required functionalities should preferably be mapped in SAP in order to ensure seamless integration and use of the existing IT infrastructure.
