Ludwigshafen, April 22, 2025 – In December 2024, LogiPlus Consulting and AutoStore hosted a joint webinar entitled “Rock Your Automation! Future-proof end-to-end warehouse processes with AutoStore and SAP EWM.” The focus was on the question: Is AutoStore really the game changer for intralogistics that many see it as? And what role does SAP EWM play as a warehouse control system?
The one-hour online event brought together specialist knowledge and practical examples. Speakers Thilo Matheis (Managing Director of LogiPlus) and Anneke Lüschen (Consulting Alliance Director EMEA at AutoStore) highlighted not only the technical possibilities of the system, but also the key success factors for implementation, such as full integration into existing processes – especially via a central control system such as SAP EWM.
The large number of participants from a wide range of industries underlines the high relevance of the topic. 12% of those surveyed have already introduced AutoStore or are in the process of implementing it. And 61% are currently looking into it more intensively, while 17% would like to evaluate the topic in the near future. These figures show that the topic of AutoStore will continue to gain momentum over the next few years.
However, the need for information is still very high among the respondents, especially when it comes to system architecture and integration. Here, 73% would like support, while 32% need advice on dimensioning and warehouse planning and 23% on user integration with the design of the workplace.
In the webinar, Anneke Lüschen from AutoStore emphasized the outstanding features of the system: flexibility, speed and easy expandability. However, she emphasised the importance of a central control system: “A leading system enables efficient control of all automated systems, material flows and resources and avoids synchronisation problems.” This enables companies to ensure maximum efficiency and target achievement.
In order for SAP EWM to serve as a central control system, a direct connection is required. Although some AutoStore integrators offer dedicated middleware with their own warehouse management software, control in different systems, in so-called silos, leads to many disadvantages, especially in terms of efficiency and speed.
That’s why a direct connection to SAP EWM is the best way forward. Of the people surveyed in the web seminar who are planning an AutoStore project, 57% have already opted for direct integration. 37% have not yet made a final decision and only 6% are toying with the idea of using middleware.
In general, there are two types of direct connection: Task Interface and Bin Interface. In the meantime, however, Task Interface has established itself. Here, inventory management and control is carried out directly in SAP EWM, as is order transmission on the basis of picking lists, determination of the order sequence and sorting, definition of storage and retrieval strategies, the user interface and much more.
However, the online event also made it clear that the true added value of the system can only be fully exploited by taking an integrated view of the end-to-end processes. This perspective was the focus of the presentations.
“AutoStore is a fantastic system that impresses with its speed and flexibility. But without holistic optimization from goods receipt to goods issue, a lot of potential remains untapped.” emphasised Thilo Matheis in his presentation. “The real challenge lies not in technical integration, but in logistical integration. Integration into the individual overall warehouse processes is essential in order to create end-to-end processes for greater efficiency and productivity.”
Conclusion: The webinar showed that AutoStore offers enormous potential for the optimization and automation of warehouse logistics. However, this requires a holistic approach to technology and logistics processes.
