Future-proof warehouse management with SAP: How to successfully migrate from SAP WM to EWM

Strategies, best practices and survey insights from the LogiPlus web seminar on 13.02.2025

Future-proof warehouse management with SAP: How to successfully migrate from SAP WM to EWM

Ludwigshafen, April 08, 2025 – In view of the upcoming end of maintenance for SAP WM, companies in the LogiPlus web seminar “Rock Your Migration! How to make the leap from SAP WM to SAP EWM”, companies were faced with the central question: How can the changeover to SAP EWM be made efficient and future-proof? The focus was on concrete approaches to migration, success factors and practical recommendations.

Urgency of SAP WM migration and strategic decisions

The end of the SAP WM era with the expiry of regular SAP WM maintenance in 2027 requires a clear roadmap for the transition. Three different migration approaches were discussed: Brownfield with adoption of the existing processes, Greenfield as a completely new approach and the hybrid Bluefield approach, in which the warehouse physics remain as they are and the processes are put to the test and optimised. LogiPlus CEO Thilo Matheis emphasized: “A well thought-out preparation phase in which key questions about warehouse organisation, system architecture and process design are clarified is crucial to success.”

SAP EWM as a strategic solution

SAP EWM offers much more than just warehouse management. The software acts as a central control unit for material flows, resource management and automation. Unlike SAP WM, EWM enables in-depth process control – from resource allocation to the complete integration of automated systems.

A particular advantage: automated warehouse technology can be controlled directly via the MFS component (Material Flow System) – without separate middleware.

SAP WM migration to EWM as an opportunity for reorganisation and success factors

Analysing existing processes at an early stage is essential. SAP EWM expert Thilo Matheis gets to the heart of the matter: “The migration is much more than a technical IT project – it offers the opportunity to fundamentally optimise warehouse logistics. Companies should critically examine existing processes and optimise them where necessary in order to make their warehouse logistics fit for the future. With sound planning, best practices and the right strategy, the switch to SAP EWM is not just a necessity, but a real competitive advantage.”

Seamless integration into the existing IT landscape enables transparency in warehouse operations and efficient use of resources. Training and active change management are also crucial in order to ensure acceptance among employees and successfully manage the changeover during ongoing operations.

On-premise, cloud or hybrid? Choosing the right architecture

Another central topic of the web seminar was the selection of the optimal system architecture, which should be evaluated according to the individual situation in terms of complexity, degree of automation and overall S/4 strategy.

Companies can either integrate SAP EWM directly into S/4HANA as an embedded solution or operate it as a decentralised solution. While the embedded version offers advantages in terms of integration with other modules, the decentralised version is particularly useful for highly automated warehouses with more complex processes. In this context, Thilo Matheis compared the various SAP EWM private cloud options with the on-premise approach.

Survey insights: Plans, uncertainties and decision trends

The survey results of the LogiPlus web seminar show that significantly more companies than 12 months ago would like to tackle the topic of SAP WM migration in the short term – around 40% in the next 24 months. However, many respondents still see the topic in the medium term, with around 47% not tackling the transformation for another 2 to 3 years, i.e. after 2027, which means extended maintenance will be necessary.

In addition, many companies are still unclear about the specific migration path. Around 40% of those surveyed have not yet decided on a specific strategy. Of those who have already made a choice, around 26% prefer Embedded EWM as an on-premise variant, followed by around 16% for Stock Room Management and 12% for the decentralised EWM solution on-premise. Only around 4% want to move to the SAP EWM Private Cloud.

LogiPlus CSO Axel Kunkelmann assesses the results: “On the one hand, we see that the cloud is still viewed with caution in SAP intralogistics. On the other hand, the results show that The need for advice remains high – especially with regard to strategy selection and architecture decisions.”
