The discontinuation of SAP WM is approaching and more and more users of SAP ERP 6.0 and SAP SCM are facing the challenge of migrating their warehouse management and logistics processes to SAP EWM or SAP Stock Room Management. But which solution best meets individual requirements now and in the future? In the recorded webinar “Quo Vadis SAP WM?” and in the recently published white paper of the same name, LogiPlus provides information on the functional scope of both solutions and gives groundbreaking tips.
There are two ways out of SAP WM – this is what the signposts at the fork in the road show a Roman on the new white paper from LogiPlus Consulting entitled “Quo Vadis SAP WM?”. With this information campaign, the SAP consulting firm aims to highlight the various migration paths for SAP WM users who will have to decide on a new warehouse management system by 2025 or 2027. There is currently great interest in the topic among users, as demonstrated by the correspondingly high number of participants that LogiPlus Managing Director Axel Kunkelmann welcomed to the live webinar on March 3, 2022. Almost 10 percent of webinar participants stated that they wanted to tackle the SAP WM migration this year, with around 60 percent planning to do so within the next three years.
In his presentation, Felix Petrich, SAP EWM Consultant LogiPlus, explained the scope of services and possibilities offered by the SAP Stock Room Management and SAP EWM solutions for warehouse management and warehouse control. He explained:
“SAP STRM is particularly suitable for smaller warehouses with less complex processes, where the focus is on warehouse management, not warehouse control.” The reason for this is that many functions previously integrated in SAP WM are no longer required, including Task & Resource Management for forklift control or control of automated systems, cross docking, yard management or shaft management.
As part of the SAP S/4HANA release and maintenance strategy, SAP guarantees support for SAP STRM until 2040, but from SAP’s point of view, no further functional developments, improvements to integration capability or SAP Fiori apps are planned.
SAP STRM is therefore usually no longer sufficient for larger and more complex warehouses. Numerous processes and functions are only supported in SAP EWM, e.g. if automated warehouse technology is to be connected, if Fiori apps, complex RF transactions, additional logistics services or multi-level picking are planned.
Petrich therefore recommends: “SAP EWM is the right solution if modern, highly flexible warehouse planning and work organisation as well as extensive automation options are required. It can be used to optimise all warehouse processes, from goods receipt and warehousing to picking and shipping.” When choosing between SAP EWM or SAP Stock Room Management, companies should definitely take future criteria into account.
LogiPlus founder Thilo Matheis has another pro argument: “With SAP EWM, companies are opting for a future-proof solution, as all further functional developments only take place in this system.”
If warehouses differ greatly, companies can also use a so-called ‘hybrid solution’ in order to, for example For example, a small warehouse with low complexity can be operated with SAP STRM and the large, complex main warehouse with SAP EWM S/4HANA advanced.
Which solution is the right one always depends on the individual situation of a company and other factors, for example on the number of warehouses, the SAP S/4HANA and business strategy, the required processes or the automation solutions used. The Scope Compliance Check offered by SAP can be an important first indicator of the scope of services a company needs in terms of the required processes and functions.
In the second step, LogiPlus offers a pre-check with a site visit to record the initial situation, needs and challenges in order to then be able to create a tailor-made recommendation for action and an individual migration roadmap.
In our white paper, we look at the imminent replacement of the warehouse management system SAP WM and the possible successor solutions SAP EWM and SAP Stock Room Management. Is the designated SAP WM successor SAP Stock Room Management with a reduced scope of services sufficient? Or do you need SAP EWM to be able to map the individual processes and requirements?
In order to be able to check the scope of functions used and the compatibility between SAP WM and STRM, SAP offers the so-called Scope Compliance Check.
LogiPlus supports you in the implementation and evaluation of the results.
In our web seminar on March 3, 2022, our experts will compare the various SAP WM, SAP EWM and SAP Stock Room Management solutions and present different migration paths. Viewers will learn how the solutions differ in their functional scope so that they can better decide which path is the right one to cover their own requirements.
