In today’s intralogistics, automation is a decisive factor in remaining competitive. DAW SE, a leading company in the building paints and building materials industry, has successfully implemented a comprehensive automation strategy together with LogiPlus Consulting. This blog post highlights the project to implement SAP Extended Warehouse Management (EWM) and the integration of automation solutions such as AutoStore, which have revolutionised DAW SE’s logistics center in Ober-Ramstadt.
In 2019, DAW SE was faced with the challenge of fundamentally modernising its warehouse logistics. The aim was to implement end-to-end warehouse automation that would both increase efficiency and enhance process flexibility. This included the migration from SAP Warehouse Management (WM) to a decentralised SAP EWM, supported by automation technologies such as AutoStore and a forklift control system.
The migration to SAP EWM was necessary in order to optimise the warehouse processes and make them future-proof.
The introduction of AutoStore and other automation systems should significantly increase storage capacity and efficiency.
Bringing external warehousing activities back to the main site in Ober-Ramstadt should simplify logistical processes and reduce costs.
The successful implementation of SAP EWM and the integration of AutoStore by LogiPlus Consulting were central components of the project. SAP EWM serves as the heart of the warehouse control system and, in combination with SAP MFS (Material Flow System), enables seamless networking of the automation systems.
The integration of SAP MFS enabled effective control of the automation systems, including AutoStore and the forklift control system.
The introduction of UI5-based interfaces for order picking helped to increase efficiency and improve the user experience.
SAP S/4HANA was implemented downstream to ensure comprehensive and end-to-end process control.
The automation of warehouse logistics at DAW SE has led to measurable results. The fully automated high-bay warehouse with 30,000 pallet spaces enables optimised warehousing and significantly accelerates picking processes. The combination of SAP EWM and AutoStore led to a considerable increase in efficiency and flexibility in the warehouse processes.
Centralisation and automation have significantly increased warehouse capacity at the Ober-Ramstadt site.
Automation ensures smooth and fast processes, which leads to higher productivity.
Faster order processing led to shorter delivery times and increased customer satisfaction.
