Press release

BYK-Chemie migrates automated hazardous materials warehouse from SAP WM to
SAP EWM - S/4HANA transformation during ongoing operations

Together with LogiPlus, the company will be demonstrating how the transition can be achieved using a brownfield approach at the online IT conference on May 7, 2026

„Vollautomatisiertes Distribution Center bei BYK-Chemie – Migration von SAP WM zu SAP EWM im Brownfield“

Ludwigshafen, April 30, 2026 – How does the migration of a highly automated distribution center from SAP WM to SAP Embedded EWM succeed – without a complete test environment and in the middle of ongoing operations? The moderated IT online conference on May 7, 2026 from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. will provide answers. In diesem Expert-Talk diskutieren Christian Schnaak, Leiter IT Digital Core SCM bei BYK-Chemie, und Thilo Matheis, CEO der SAP EWM Experten von LogiPlus Consulting, gemeinsam mit Moderatorin Maike Rose, Geschäftsführerin des IT-Onlinemagazins.

Under the title “Fully Automated Distribution Center at BYK-Chemie – Migration from SAP WM to SAP EWM in the Brownfield“, BYK-Chemie GmbH and LogiPlus Consulting GmbH provide practical insights into a challenging transformation project. The focus is on the replacement of an SAP WM system that has grown over many years and has been individually developed with a scalable, standard-oriented SAP Embedded EWM solution – parallel to the SAP S/4HANA transformation. Participants will gain first-hand, unfiltered insights from the customer’s perspective.

Main topics of the IT online conference

At its Wesel site, BYK-Chemie operates a highly automated distribution center with around 11,000 pallet spaces, electric overhead conveyors, storage and retrieval machines and KUKA picking robots. The combination of high technical complexity, hazardous materials logistics and 24/7 operation made the project much more than a classic IT migration. The focus was on process stability, the integration of automation technology and a smooth transition without interrupting warehouse operations.

In such an environment, migrating from SAP WM to SAP Embedded EWM is not just a technological changeover, but a strategic decision for future-proofing, scalability and standardization,” explains LogiPlus CEO Thilo Matheis.

In the live talk, Christian Schnaak and Thilo Matheis talk openly about key challenges and success factors. Topics covered include the brownfield approach, test strategies with simulation under real conditions and the integration of material flow systems (SAP MFS), PLC telegrams and automated conveyor technology processes.

“, Schnaak explains the decision in favor of Brownfield.

Another focus is on the role of people in the transformation: change management, training, acceptance and the close collaboration between logistics, IT and external partners. The speakers show how important it was to involve all affected employees in all phases of the project and what role the location of the project site directly at the warehouse played.

The talk format, moderated by Maike Rose, offers participants space for questions and direct exchange – without a marathon of slides, but with real practical experience.
