Successful migration to SAP HANA on IBM Power: How to make a smooth transition

The migration of tried-and-tested ERP systems to SAP HANA on IBM Power offers enormous opportunities, but also poses challenges. Axel Kunkelmann, Managing Director of LogiPlus, explained the key aspects and success factors for this complex process in an article in the June issue of the trade magazine DV-Dialog. In this blog post, we summarize the most important points and give you valuable tips for a smooth transition to SAP HANA on IBM Power.

Challenges and solutions for migration

Switching to SAP HANA on IBM Power involves complexities that should not be underestimated. But with the right strategy, stumbling blocks can be avoided. Kunkelmann outlines the migration process in four main thematic blocks: Power Infrastructure, Operations, Operations and Application Conversion. Each of these areas has its own challenges and requires specific measures.

Power infrastructure and operation: few hurdles, easy to overcome

The IBM Power infrastructure provides a robust basis for the migration to SAP HANA. Kunkelmann sees only a few hurdles here, as the SAP HANA platform is based on Linux and therefore harmonizes well with the IBM Power architecture. There are also only minor differences in operation compared to other platforms, such as the use of a Hardware Management Console (HMC). However, these differences are manageable and can be dealt with with minimal effort. The switch to SAP HANA on IBM Power is therefore relatively uncritical in these areas.

Operational area: different effects depending on the business model

The differences are more noticeable in the operational area, particularly with regard to backup strategies and high availability. The effects depend heavily on how the previous ERP system was configured and which business model the company is pursuing. Here, Kunkelmann recommends proactive preparation by setting up an SAP S/4HANA sandbox. In this test environment, companies can run through various scenarios and prepare for the specific requirements of their migration.

Application changeover: the biggest challenge

According to Kunkelmann, converting the applications is the biggest challenge. The effort involved here is considerable, as all “inhibitors” that could hinder a successful conversion from ERP to SAP S/4HANA must be identified and removed. In particular, this includes “housekeeping” in the legacy system, i.e. cleaning up and adapting existing in-house developments (Z programs) to the requirements of SAP S/4HANA. This step is essential to ensure compatibility and guarantee a smooth migration.

Advantages of SAP HANA on IBM Power: flexibility, availability, performance

Despite the challenges, the migration to SAP HANA on IBM Power offers considerable advantages that justify the effort. The IBM Power platform is characterised by its high flexibility in terms of resources (memory and cores) and enables customization to actual needs. In addition, it offers higher availability for business-critical S/4HANA workloads and improved performance, which ultimately leads to an optimisation of the total cost of ownership (TCO) compared to x86 systems.

Conclusion: Success with the right preparation

Migrating to SAP HANA on IBM Power can be a complex process that requires careful planning and preparation. Axel Kunkelmann emphasizes that a clear strategy and early testing in an SAP S/4HANA sandbox are crucial for success. Companies that follow these steps consistently can overcome the challenges and benefit from the enormous advantages of this powerful platform.
